History of Regina
Plains Cree, Saulteaux and Métis hunters knew the Wascana Creek area as oskana kâ-asastêki, 'where the bones are piled,' long before the Canadian Pacific Railway founded Regina there in 1882. The town became the capital of the North-West Territories, the site of Louis Riel's trial and execution in 1885, and in 1905 the capital of Saskatchewan. In the 20th century it saw a deadly tornado, the Regina Riot, the birth of the CCF and the launch of public medical care.
